Padma Multipurpose Bridge Paragraph

Padma Bridge, a messenger of modern communication system as a result of the combined efforts of the people and government of Bangladesh, was inaugurated on 25 June 2024 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. It is a multi-purpose bridge project over the fast-flowing Padma River in Bangladesh. The country’s largest mega project has been built with the sole efforts of Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and fully internally funded without any foreign aid. In 2007, initially the cost of Padma Bridge was estimated at 10 thousand 161 crore 75 lakh taka. However, due to design changes, river management and various technical complications, its cost is around 30 thousand crores. Munshiganj’s Laujong is on its east bank and Shariatpur and Madaripur are on its west bank. The total length of this bridge is 6,150 meters and width is 18.18 meters. The construction work of this bridge started on December 7, 2014 with only concrete and steel. It was built by China Major Bridge Engineering Construction Company Limited. 20 thousand people including 2 thousand foreigners are directly involved in various projects. Through the inauguration of this bridge, 19 districts of the southwestern region have been directly connected with the eastern part of the country, including Dhaka, and most of the districts will be connected when the railway is opened. The importance of Padma Bridge in changing the economic development of Bangladesh and the quality of life of billions of people is immense. Besides, this bridge will be one of the most interesting and historical monuments of the world and the key to a successful economy. Bangladesh has entered a new era with the construction of Padma Bridge. Most importantly, Padma Bridge will be a shining symbol of hope, trust, devotion and faith of the people of Bangladesh.

Padma Bridge is the longest bridge in Bangladesh. This dream bridge is the biggest project of Bangladesh which was built without any foreign aid. It is a multipurpose road-rail bridge over the Padma River. It is the 6th largest multi-span bridge in the world. Padma Bridge is the 122nd longest bridge in the world and the longest bridge in South Asia. Construction began on 7 December 2014 and was completed in May 2024. On 25th June 2024 Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the bridge to the public.

The length of the bridge is 6.15 km and width is 18.10 m. It consists of a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single-track railway on the lower level. The total number of spans of the bridge is 41 and 42 supports are installed to connect both the spans. Each span is 150 meters long and weighs 3140 tonnes. It is a cluster bridge. The main raw material of the bridge is steel. The bridge opened new horizons in the country’s communication system.

It will revolutionize the lives of the people living in the southwest and it will connect 22 districts directly to the capital. This saves 2 hours of vehicle time previously wasted due to ferry transport system. It will play an important role in the economic sector of Bangladesh. Industrial development and employment opportunities will increase.

Padma Bridge is the biggest bridge in Bangladesh. As the Bangladesh government started the project from their own funds and overcoming all the challenges itself is a new beginning. As already mentioned in the Padma Bridge paragraph, this bridge has a great impact on the development of the country’s economy. The bridge will increase total GDP by 1.2% as well as increase gross output from the southern region by 35%.
